Work Abroad! Develop global skills!
For over 50 years IAESTE has promoted communication between cultures around the
world. By joining IAESTE and working abroad, you can contribute to this exchange
of cultural values and in turn learn a lot about the people of another country, the world, and yourself.
Even without getting an internship in a foreign country, you can learn valuable
leadership and cooperation skills through involvement in your LC. You can also
attend the Regional or National Conferences where seminars and workshops are
offered to develop skills that will help you throughout your career, wherever you
decide to go. Being involved with incoming interns and participating in the community
that automatically forms around IAESTE students is also extremely rewarding.
What, exactly?
The benefits of being in IAESTE are numerous, but here are many examples
of what you can expect to get out of being involved:
Skills
- From general membership in IAESTE, members will learn leadership and cooperation from working with others in the group. Members develop team-building skills that are necessary in the workplace today. For your future job, you need leadership, "soft" skills, AND technical know-how
- Depending on your level of involvement, you may gain skills from working with
your LC or at an internship that you can put on your résumé
- From job-raising, students will develop a professional attitude, self-confidence, and a great network
Travel
- If you work hard for the LC, your chances are increased to get a placement overseas. The benefits of working overseas are numerous, including: a chance to put your classroom knowledge into action in the workplace, an opportunity to become a fully functional member of another culture, developing problem solving skills and the self-confidence to become independent in another country, practice a foreign language… This list goes on and on
- Even for those who do not want to work abroad, membership gives students the opportunity to learn about international careers and get involved with the international community through interaction with incoming interns, speakers, and trips. Members are actively involved in an international organization of over 80 countries
Leadership
- Develop and practice your leadership skills by leading one of the most dynamic student groups on campus
- The LC will be rewarded financially by the IAESTE National Committee for each position raised, so funding for trips, speakers, and other functions will be possible.
Fun
- Participation in IAESTE is rewarding and fun from organizing to participating in IAESTE events!
- Go to a national conference, attend a regional conference and meet new friends from around the country
- Meet new people from around the world. It is a great opportunity to share experiences with others
Service
- IAESTE US members provide an important service to the world - every intern is
a representative of their country of origin; you can be the person that comes to mind
when someone thinks, "American"
- At the same time, all IAESTE student members share a sense of belonging to an
international organization that promotes cross-cultural communication. There really
is nothing like the sense of community formed by IAESTE students, regardless of
where they are
Networking - It's Who You Know
- IAESTE United States members come into contact with a large number of companies, and meet personnel officers in those companies. You also meet the decision makers on campus. This includes Associate Deans, Deans, Directors and influential professors
- IAESTE United States members learn about the job market and how people are hired, and have a chance to meet human resources representatives and company leaders
During reception, IAESTE United States members develop a sense of
responsibility to their incoming interns. Through this you can build cross-cultural
communication skills, organizational skills and language skills, too. By making
contacts with foreign students, you can make friends all over the world, and always
have a couch to sleep on in another country ;)
